Death of the CPL

Pertinent to our gaming-for-profit conversations: After a ten-year run, the Cyberathlete Professional League has closed down, canceling its 2008 events. Their reasons include "the current fragmentation of the sport, a crowded field of competing leagues, and the current economic climate." On the other hand, the Championship Gaming Series seems to be fine. Wonder what the difference is?

The CPL's notice, and Joystiq's commentary.

Actually, the CGS shows signs of problems too. The industry is in dire straights, mainly because of unchecked greed and failure to give the market what it wants.
