Upon the mention of Viral Marketing, I remembered one of my favorite viral marketing campaigns ever. Unfortunately, the site doesn't exist anymore, but I found some links that show what it was. The following are links remarking on the viral marketing for Shadow of the Colossus. They mocked up some fake documentary crews and had them discover "real life" Colossi. They called it, "Giantology". Enjoy.

Like I said, I personally think this is one of the more clever viral marketing ads I've seen.

It's funny how these viral campaign work. I would like to see the company's risk/ benefit analysis for some of these.
It works well for SOTC because the game itself and the ad were not meant for the mainstream.
Some firms, however, try to use viral marketing to reach the mainstream which may end up proving quite costly with little measurable effect.
