In this article, Justin Marks, speaks out against gamers thrashing game adaptations. He also offers some solid advice on how to fix the problems, as well as why they mostly seem to fail. He offers a unique, Hollywood perspective to adapting games.

I like his point about making films more than a genre film and using Halo as an example. I've never played Halo and don't know much about the story, so it's probably unfair for me to talk about it in this post.

It seems to come down to story again. Maybe game stories aren't yet up to par with stories in other media, or maybe they are and aren't being interpreted well enough.

Even if there is a plot or a setting we've seen again and again, what happens in that space and with the characters can make it a whole new experience. Even if Halo's intro might look just like Alien's, there has to be something in there that makes it stand out and above the rest.

Lots of stories are repeated with just a new set of characters, it can be successful with strong characters. I also see the point that the movie must appeal to a mass audience, therefore potentially losing some of the story the gamers have come to know and love.
