Line Rider and a tiny bit about machinima

Drawing a bit of a blank on the articles this week. So, I thought I'd show something related to gamer culture that also pertains to my semester paper. I'm writing on the rise of gamers who like to create in games more than playing them. One of the prime examples of this is Line Rider. This game literally could not exist without a huge creative fan base. The basic idea is to draw tracks for a little man on a slide to ride down. It's supposed to be a basic level editor, but the fans have taken it to a new level and given it a cult status. It's a good example of exactly how far the creativity of gamer culture is willing to go.

Here's a good example of one of the many artistically rendered levels. Keep in mind that this is ONLY done with a line drawing tool. There are no fill functions.

Also, I ran across this while writing the post.

Apparently there's an ACADEMY for Machinima now, and they have a film festival. We've come a long way since the days of people making jokes in Gary's Mod and Unreal.

I haven't heard of Line Rider before. From the videos I watched, I'm guessing you don't really "play" the character on the sled. The game is the drawing and figuring out interesting lines the sled can slide over (I liked when the sled followed the contour of the chimney smoke).

I would think Line Rider is, like you've stated, a level editor and not really a "game," unless I'm wrong about controlling the person in the sled.

Games like Neverwinter Nights and The Elder Scrolls series come with a construction set, which is where I find it more interesting that players might spend more time in the construction set than playing in the game.

I don't know if this might help in one way or another with your paper, but I've recently been playing The Sims 2 for class, and I find more fun in building houses and community lots than leading my Sims through their lives.
